Connect an AI Assistant to PrintTiler with MCP
Use a compatible local AI client to prepare tiled layouts in PrintTiler. You stay in control of file access, preview, and PDF export.
Quick start
- Enable MCP in PrintTiler (off by default).
- Authorize folders and configure a compatible local STDIO client.
- Review state and preview; approve before PDF export.
Example workflow
Illustrative prompts only—not an actual transcript.
Read the current PrintTiler state and report the actual tile columns, rows, and page count. Do not change anything.Open /Users/me/Documents/poster.png (authorized input). Set A4 portrait, Custom Fit, 2 pages across and 3 down. Preview and report the actual page count; aspect lock may affect it. STOP—do not export.Inspect readiness and preview, then STOP and ask for my approval. Only after I approve, export a PDF to /Users/me/Documents/output.pdf.
Requested page grids may preserve aspect lock: inspect the actual preview count; 2 × 3 does not guarantee six pages.
Prompt scenarios for the MCP workflow
Copy a ready prompt, replace the placeholders with authorized absolute Mac paths, and paste it into your MCP client. These examples prepare or review layouts: most stop at the preview, the export example waits for your explicit approval, and MCP does not print — actual printing stays manual in the app.
Classroom or home poster
Tile one image across two A4 portrait pages (across = 2, two columns wide), report the actual rows and page count, and stop before export or printing.
View prompt
Read the current PrintTiler state. Open the image at <INPUT_PATH> and confirm it is ready. Set A4 portrait with Custom Fit across=2 (two columns wide), keeping the current aspect lock unchanged. Report the actual columns, rows, and page count, and display one first output tile from the preview. STOP before export and do not print. The preview returns one output tile, not the assembled poster.
Compare A4 portrait and Letter landscape
Compare both supported papers with the current settings, then restore the original paper until you choose.
View prompt
Using the current PrintTiler document, read the state and note the current paper and orientation. Keep the same fit mode and the current margin and overlap. Compare A4 portrait with Letter landscape; both are supported. For each, report the actual page count and display one first output tile. Restore the original paper and orientation, then ask me which one to use. Do not export.Choose the paper actually loaded in your printer; this does not promise fewer sheets.
Wide landscape illustration
Fit a wide landscape illustration to Letter landscape width with Fit Width and check the actual preview, which may be a single page.
View prompt
Open the landscape illustration at <INPUT_PATH> and confirm it is ready. Set Letter landscape with Fit Width. Report the actual columns, rows, and page count, and display one first output tile from the preview. STOP here and do not export.Review the preview and actual page count before choosing the next step.
Poster from one PDF source page
Tile only source page 2 of a PDF across A4 portrait pages, report the count, and stop before export.
View prompt
Open the PDF at <INPUT_PDF_PATH> and check it is ready and how many source pages it has; if it has fewer than 2 pages, stop. Select source PDF page 2 (one-based). Set A4 portrait with Custom Fit across=2 (two columns wide), keeping the current aspect lock unchanged. Report the actual page count and display one first output tile. STOP and do not export. This tiles the selected source page only, not the entire PDF as a batch.
Export after explicit approval
Review the grid and first output tile, then export to a new PDF only after you approve.
View prompt
Read the current document, source page, ready state, and actual grid from PrintTiler, and display one first output tile. STOP and ask for my explicit approval. Only after I approve, export to the new file at <OUTPUT_PDF_PATH>. If that file already exists, stop and ask me for a new name instead of overwriting. Inspect the destination first and do the export once; do not retry automatically after a timeout. Do not print.<OUTPUT_PDF_PATH> stands for the entire absolute .pdf path, so do not add an extension to it.
Replace <INPUT_PATH>, <INPUT_PDF_PATH>, and <OUTPUT_PDF_PATH> with authorized absolute Mac paths. MCP setup is required first. These are illustrative prompt templates, not an executed conversation record. A preview may send image content and layout metadata to your assistant or its provider. Do not edit the document manually while an MCP request is running. The current aspect lock is left unchanged, and a requested grid does not guarantee a fixed page count. MCP does not print. If your client offers voice input you can use it, but PrintTiler is not a voice UI.
MCP does not print. MCP is off by default and uses a compatible local STDIO client. Authorize folders; preview content may be shared with your assistant/provider.
Requirements
PrintTiler 1.14.0 or later on macOS 12 or later, plus an installed, trusted MCP client that supports local STDIO servers. This guide covers local clients, not remote web connectors. PrintTiler’s MCP service needs no extra Python, Node, or Swift installation; the client must already be installed.
Set up your client
- Open Settings → MCP → Enable in PrintTiler. MCP is off by default; the app remembers your choice.
- Open Settings → MCP → Setup MCP… and select your client. Copy the actual executable path generated by the app; it may not be installed in /Applications.
- Click File Access… at the lower left of Setup MCP. Use Add Folder… to authorize input folders for reading and output folders for reading/writing. The two lists are separate; Remove revokes a selected folder grant.
- Follow the matching client instructions below, then close Setup MCP before asking the assistant to use tools.
Claude Desktop
- Open Settings → Developer → Edit Config. On Mac the file is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.
- Merge the generated mcpServers.printtiler entry into valid JSON without removing other servers or settings. Save and fully restart Claude Desktop; closing a window is not a full restart.
Claude Code
- Open a terminal in the intended project directory. Copy and run the command generated by PrintTiler. The default local scope applies to the current user and project, not every project.
- Restart Claude Code in that directory. Check printtiler with /mcp or claude mcp list; update an existing entry rather than adding a duplicate.
ChatGPT (Codex)
- In the desktop app’s Codex mode, open Settings → MCP Servers → Add server and choose STDIO. This is not a web ChatGPT remote connector.
- Copy each app-generated field separately: Name is printtiler, Command is the actual executable path, and Arguments is --mcp-stdio. Save and restart the client. The GUI has no tool-timeout control; do not look for a 210-second setting there.
Codex CLI
- Open ~/.codex/config.toml, or $CODEX_HOME/config.toml when using a custom CODEX_HOME. Add or update [mcp_servers.printtiler] once, preserving other tables.
- The generated TOML includes tool_timeout_sec = 210. Save and restart Codex CLI, then check /mcp or codex mcp list. For other clients, use a timeout longer than the server’s 180 seconds where configurable.
Configuration formats
The app-generated configuration values are authoritative; samples below are illustrative only. JSON clients use a stdio command and arguments; TOML clients use a server table and timeout. Always copy the current values displayed by Setup MCP. No remote server URL or “open -a” launcher is needed.

tool_timeout_sec = 210File access and privacy
File Access… configures separate lists: input folders are read-only and output folders allow read/write. Add or remove multiple folders as needed. Access to an unlisted input folder prompts Authorize Folder at directory level. Saving an existing file requires client elicitation confirmation when supported, otherwise the macOS save panel; a new file in an authorized output folder may be saved without another dialog. Example preview may send image content and layout metadata to the assistant, subject to the provider’s policies. PrintTiler does not upload files to its servers. MCP does not print: there is no printing tool. Turn it off in Settings > MCP and revoke folder grants when desired.
Use the five tools
The five available tools are printtiler_get_state, printtiler_open_document, printtiler_set_layout, printtiler_preview, and printtiler_export_pdf. They act on the current frontmost document window; avoid editing it simultaneously. A safe sequence is inspect state, open an authorized local file, set layout, preview, then export PDF. A requested 3-by-2 grid is not a guarantee of exactly six pages: read the actual preview columns, rows, and page count before export.
If PrintTiler is not running, the first actual tool call can open the app. MCP must already have been enabled; a tool call never silently enables it.
Example prompt
Example: ‘Read the current state. Open /Users/me/Documents/input.png. Set A4 portrait, Custom Fit, 3 pages across and 2 down. Show the preview and report the actual columns, rows, and page count. STOP and ask for my approval. Only after I approve, export to /Users/me/Documents/output.pdf.’ Replace the example paths with authorized absolute local paths. Inspect the output before retrying after a timeout.

Troubleshooting
If the app moved, copy the newly generated configuration. If setup is busy, close Setup MCP before tool calls. If permission is denied, authorize the folder through the app; do not bypass permissions with chmod. For an invalid client configuration, check that client’s local STDIO support and isolate its configuration. Not every client bearing a Claude or Codex name has been tested or is guaranteed compatible. The server timeout is 180 seconds including dialogs; clients should allow longer (the generated Codex value is 210 seconds). After a timeout, inspect whether output was already created before retrying.
