Poster Printing Calculator

Plan a multi-sheet poster before printing. Enter image pixels and a target PPI, or choose a finished size. All calculations and optional image-size reading stay in your browser.

Calculation mode
Source image

Use the pixel dimensions after cropping or editing. Other image formats can be entered manually. 1–200000 px

Optional PNG or JPEG, up to 20 MB. Only dimensions are read locally; the image and filename are not sent to our servers.

PPI converts source pixels to a target physical size. It is not printer DPI, and changing metadata adds no detail.

Margins and overlap

Estimated layout

Estimate only. The initial 5 mm margin on every edge is an assumption, not your printer’s detected printable area. Adjust it to your printer.

Rectangles represent printable tiles with repeated overlap. The outlined image may be smaller than the full grid; this is not an artwork or print preview.

PrintTiler

PrintTiler is a native Mac app. Enter the calculated image dimensions in Custom Fit → Print Size. Choose your actual printer and paper, inspect every sheet, and test two neighboring sheets before printing at 100%, single-sided.

Worked A4 example

4000 × 6000 px · A4 · Portrait · Margin on each edge: 5 mm · Overlap between sheets: 5 mm

Target PPIImage print sizeColumns × rowsSheets
30033.87 × 50.8 cm / 13.33 × 20 in2 × 24
15067.73 × 101.6 cm / 26.67 × 40 in4 × 416

How the estimate works

  1. Image size in mm = pixels ÷ target PPI × 25.4. In finished-size mode, the height follows the original aspect ratio and effective PPI = pixel width ÷ (print width in mm ÷ 25.4).
  2. Printable width and height = paper sides minus the margin on both edges. The step between neighboring tiles = printable side minus overlap.
  3. One sheet covers the first printable side. If more is needed, add the remaining length divided by the tile step, rounded up. Multiply columns by rows. Both paper orientations are compared; ties prefer portrait.

Before you print

  • The browser cannot detect your printer’s safe area, crop-mark space, driver scaling or physical calibration. Its estimate can differ from the app’s actual layout.
  • This tool estimates one image at a time. It does not split files, export printable pages, arrange multiple photos, or measure vector PDF quality.
  • Print on matching paper at 100%/Actual Size, single-sided, without a second fit-to-page or poster-tiling operation. Check an outer edge and a seam first.

Calculator questions

Is the PPI here the same as printer DPI?

No. PPI is source-image pixels per printed inch; printer DPI describes ink or toner dots. At a fixed pixel count, lower target PPI means a physically larger image. It does not create extra detail or change your printer’s resolution setting.

Why include margins and overlap?

Margins protect the printer’s non-printable edges. Overlap repeats a strip on neighboring sheets for trimming and alignment. They reduce the usable coverage differently, so dividing image area by paper area is not enough to predict the grid.

Do I have to upload my photo?

No. You can type the dimensions or select a PNG/JPEG to read its dimensions in this browser. The calculator does not upload the image, send its filename, or save the file. Calculation analytics do not include image pixels or finished dimensions.

Will the estimated sheet count match every printer?

Not necessarily. The result uses the paper, uniform margins and overlap you enter, with no crop-mark or calibration allowance. Select the actual printer in PrintTiler, confirm its printable area and output summary, and test before printing the complete poster.
